Dolphins will travel to New York early to catch Broadway show

Like any good Big Apple tourist, the Miami Dolphins will take in a Broadway show while traveling to New York this weekend.

Team owner Jeffrey Ross arranged for the team to leave Miami one day earlier than usual so the players and coaches can watch the new Broadway play "Lombardi," which is based on the life of the former Green Bay Packers coach. According to the Miami Herald, the Dolphins will arrive in New York on Friday morning, have a practice at the New York Giants training facility in the afternoon (the team asked the Giants for permission to do so) and then catch the show at night, presumably after stopping by Sardi's for a pre-curtain snack.

Emergency fund launches Global Travel Market by for Australian bush fires

Global Travel Market is launching an emergency fund for those suffering in the fires which have swept across Victoria in Australia.

Chief executive Dave Simmons has reactivated the emergency Travel Aid 50 account, which was set up in response to the tsunami in 2004, and has kick-started the collection with a £1,000 donation.

Now, he is appealing to other travel industry companies to give as much as they can to help the victims of the fires which started on Saturday and have killed at least 200 people and left thousands homeless after 5,000 homes were destroyed.

He added: “These numbers are expected to increase dramatically over the coming days.

“Whilst I am sure that we are all confronting challenges of our own from the current trading environment, this type of disaster simply puts everything into perspective. Any donation, however large or small, I am sure would be greatly received.”

Simmons said all money collected will be donated to charities nominated by Tourism Victoria. Anyone wishing to donate to the charity should send a cheque made out to Travel Aid 50 to Travel Aid 50, c/o Global Travel Market, 6th Floor Regal House, 70 London Road, Twickenham TW1 3QS.

Meanwhile the Qantas Group has donated more than £45,000 to the 2009 Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund which also aims to support individuals and communities affected by the weekend’s bushfires.

From empty sun loungers at luxury hotels to vacant bar stools in dingy saloons, tourism in Thailand is going through its worst slump in decades, a result of the global economic slowdown and its own political turmoil.

“Right now, business is so slow. Some nights, only one customer,” said Jodie, a 24-year-old transvestite go-go dancer teetering around the capital’s Nana red-light district in spike-heeled, thigh-high boots.

Jodie’s gloom is echoed by everybody in an industry that accounts for 6 percent of the economy in the self-styled Land of Smiles and directly employs 1.8 million people.

The head of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Phornsiri Manoharn, estimates the eight-day closure of Bangkok’s $4 billion Suvarnabhumi airport by antigovernment protesters a month ago will have caused one million foreign visitors to cancel trips or go elsewhere.

“This is the hardest hit we’ve ever encountered in the 48 years we’ve been promoting tourism to Thailand,” she said. And that’s after the country suffered through the December 2004 tsunami, bird flu and SARS.

With arrival numbers for December likely to be 500,000 — a third of forecasts — the Tourism Authority’s goal of attracting 15.5 million tourists in 2008 and 16 million in 2009 is in tatters.

Far from the 70 percent occupancy they normally see in December, Bangkok’s top hotels are 25 percent full, forcing management to close floors, lay off contractors and ask employees to take unpaid leave.

“It would be fair to say that this will be the lowest monthly occupancy we’ve experienced in the history of the hotel,” said Wayne Buckingham, managing director of the 740-room Royal Orchid Sheraton.

The corporate and conference business has been hit particularly hard. That segment of the tourism industry was more sensitive than others to the travel warnings issued during the airport occupation, the climax of months of sometimes violent political confrontation.

But Mr. Buckingham said that people in Asia had been through downturns before and would get through this one, too. “It’s just that this one will take a bit longer,” he said, estimating that it will be 12 to 18 months before things return to normal.

With the export-driven economy already feeling the pinch from the global slowdown, many analysts say they believe the airport protests by the People’s Alliance for Democracy could tip Thailand into recession.

Even if tourism avoids the large-scale layoffs already hitting manufacturing, getting the industry back on its feet will be yet another problem for the new prime minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, who heads a shaky coalition.

If he starts diverting provincial cash to Bangkok or the south, where the best beaches and strongest support for his Democrat party are to be found, he risks further alienating voters in the north and northeast, where loyalty to the former leader, Thaksin Shinawatra, runs deep.

However, there was expected to be great pressure to intervene, because the dearth of visitors was hurting a wide range of people, including taxi drivers, antique dealers, gem traders and thousands of service workers.

The only people still smiling are the foreign visitors who decided not to be put off by the likelihood of more political unrest.

“To be honest, it’s worked out fairly well — all the sights are pretty much empty and we’ve been getting a guide all to ourselves,” said Michael Gude, a businessman from London.

The fact is that the travel industry is increasingly biased against the child-free holidaymaker. The big summer-sun tour operators admit that families are better for business: they are far less likely to book at the last minute and are usually forced to buy holidays in the expensive peak-season periods.

On the other hand, the travel operators don’t want to miss out on the adult market, so they pay lip service to couples and singles by selecting top-end hotels with limited family appeal and sell them as “exclusively adult”. But there’s rarely any guarantee they actually will be child-free – unless a particular hotel is sold only by a single tour operator, the hotelier is free to contract out some rooms to another operator on a different basis – and, therefore, may well be taking bookings from families. Another problem is that at smaller, boutique-style hotels, the policy on children is determined by the owner or manager. The risk then is that a property may be sold as a child-free hotel, only to have the owner opening the pool up to families at the weekend.

Then again, a hotel that really is child-free runs the risk of being a honeymoon enclave – this is particularly true of some all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean. Global meltdown affects foreign tourist arrivals in India

Vijay Thakur, president of the Indian Association for Tour Operators, said: “There has been a deep impact on the industry. We have registered as many as 20 percent cancellations since the attacks - especially in that western region of the country.”

“Tourism was already facing the consequences of the economic meltdown - again 15-20 percent slowdown. With this (the terror attack), it’s worse,” he added.

Thakur said while the number of bookings has come down, industry associations are trying to reassure those who have already booked and potential clients about their safety.

Another ministry official said: “The economic meltdown had already impacted the tourist influx and in the light of the recent terror attacks there is certainly a fear that there would be a decrease in foreign tourist arrivals.”

He said the picture would be clear next month when the figures would be compiled.

However, there is one positive factor. Many countries that advised their citizens against visiting India in the wake of several bomb blasts and terror attacks earlier this year have not pressed the panic button after Nov 26.

This could be due to repeated requests by Indian Tourism Minister Ambika Soni, underlining that India is a large country and one incident doesn’t make the entire country unsafe for travellers.

The senior ministry official said some countries had even “modified” their travel advisories.

“The tourism secretary and the missions abroad have been stressing this fact. It has paid off. We can take some credit for their modifying their advisories,” the official said, not wishing to be named.

For example, the US embassy Tuesday replaced its earlier advisory of Nov 29 and advised “US citizens travelling to or already in India to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness”.

Australia and Britain have also told their citizens to “exercise caution”.

Travellers from the US, Britain, France, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands comprise a majority of overseas visitors to India.

“We hope the year-end celebrations would see a rise in their number,” the official said.

This month, the United Nations convened a conference, "Climate Change and Tourism," for tour operators and officials from nearly 100 countries to discuss the impact of global warming on their livelihoods. "The tourism industry must adapt rapidly," the final report concluded.

In the developed world, tour operators do not generally face a crisis, though profits will depend on successful adjustment. But along the equator, keeping the tourist industry afloat is often a matter of national survival. In much of Africa for instance, tourism is the major source of income and often the only source of foreign currency.
Geoffrey Lipman, assistant secretary general of the UN World Tourism Organization, said by telephone from the meeting, held in Davos, Switzerland that "The entire tourism product will be affected - every destination has a climate-related component." He further added if the climate is going to change, "which we know it will, we'd all better adapt."
"Some people are going to find that they had tourism before and don't now," Lipman said. "In the Canadian Rockies it may be the reverse."
For some destinations, both warm and cold, climate change is already having an impact on tourism and planning.
Imagine a ski resort whose chairlifts are in the lower reaches of mountains, without decent snow. Or a scuba club whose reefs succumbed to warmer and stormier seas or a golfing hotel in a district where water shortages made it impossible to keep fairways green. All are real possibilities, industry experts say, and in fact, early effects are already being felt.
Fijian planners are trying to gauge the course of such change and set new standards, like guideline for how far above the water bungalows should be built to be safe if the sea level rises. "At the moment the effect is subtle, but we don't want our reefs - our island - to disappear," Kaumaitotoya said.
"Tourism is the vehicle for poverty alleviation in Fiji - that's how important it has become," said Banuve Kaumaitotoya, permanent secretary of Fiji's new Ministry of Tourism and Environment, who attended the Davos conference. "Without it, our economy would collapse. So we have to plan to mitigate and adapt to climate change."
At the Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort in Canada, glaciers are receding and good snow is found higher up the mountain than 10 years ago. "We've been building lifts higher, in more snow-reliant zones to give us more stability," said Arthur De Jong, the mountain planning and environment resource manager at the resort.
In addition, the resort has a broader green plan. It is making energy to run the lifts from snow runoff on the mountain. Its ski village is car free. And the resort has diversified from snow and it now has a booming summer business as well.
But undertaking new engineering projects and computer simulations take money and expertise that are in short supply in much of the world.
"Adaptation is expensive and the finances are a big challenge for place like Kenya," said Judith Gona, executive director of Ecotourism Kenya, which is trying to make that country's travel industry greener.
In the short term, global warming provides opportunities too, especially in temperate zones. Warming trends have lengthened the golfing season in Antalya, Turkey, by over a month, said Ugur Budak, golf coordinator of Akkanat Holdings there.
Golfing used to begin in March. But tourists from Britain and Germany are now coming to Antalya in February. "Winters are milder so the effect on us for now is good," Budak said. So far there had not been problems like the water shortages experienced in other parts of the world, he said, "But we know we could be vulnerable in the future."

Profits at Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. dropped 17 percent to $129 million, or 61 cents a share, compared to last year, when the company got the benefit of tax breaks from the sale of hotels.

The company said it now projects its full-year earnings, not counting special gains and charges, to be $2.63 a share, compared with the $2.78-a-share estimate it released in August. The earnings report, which was released before the stock market opened, sent the value of the company's shares down $1.97 to $55.61.

The drop in third-quarter profit came despite a 5.4 percent increase in sales, which totaled $1.54 billion and was driven by high demand for hotel rooms, said Starwood, which runs Sheraton, W, Westin and St. Regis hotels.

During the third quarter of 2006, White Plains-based Starwood earned $155 million, or 71 cents on a per-share basis. Not counting special items, the company would have earned 68 cents a share from continuing operations in both quarters.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial predicted earnings of 65 cents a share.

This year's results included special charges of 7 cents a share, mainly to losses on asset impairments. Last year, the company recorded a gain of 3 cents a share from the tax benefits.

The company's hotel business is faring much better than its vacation-ownership business. On the hotel side, revenue per available room - which takes into account rates and occupancy - rose 9.5 percent.

But revenues from the vacation-ownership business increased only 1.2 percent to $252 million, the company said. Construction delays held down sales, the company said.

Starwood expects its vacation ownership business to decline next year.

Panch-Ganga Ghat : The Ganga, the Yamuna, the Sarsvati the Kirana and the Dhupapapa, among which only the first one is visible and rest are vanished, or assumed in the form of manifestation. Sonamarg

Sonamarg is 84 km from Srinagar along the Srinagar - Leh Highway at an altitude of 2740 metres. The river Sindh making the valley quite captivating shapes the town. Known as the meadow of gold strewn with the alpine flowers and surrounded by towering mountains; it is the most beautiful part of Kashmir.

The Shankaracharya Temple, provides excellent views of the valley of Kashmir. Other places of tourist attractions are the Mughal Gardens of Shalimar where flowers, fountains, streams can be seen as well as the beautiful Mosque of Hazrathal. Pahalgam is a pleasant little, single street town full of streams. The site of the start to the shrine of Amarnath begins here. Gulmarg also has great scenic beauty to offer.

Pahalgam

This place is around 96 kms from Srinagar, heralded by gushing, silvery streams of ice - water and by densely wooded mountains. Pahalgam appears round the corner against a background of mountains and glistering glaciers with streams rushing past. The place is quite famous as the starting point of Amarnath yatra. Pahalgam is the starting point for many trekking trails, such as to the Kolohoi Glacier, Amarnath, Zanskar and Kargil.

Gulmarg

The large meadow of Gulmarg is 52 kms southwest of Srinagar. The name means meadow of flowers and it is also an excellent base for trekking, ideal for adventure seekers. In winter it turns into India's premier skiing resort.

MUGHAL GARDENS

Kashmir was a favourite of the Mughal emperors who visited it as often as they could. Cool and refreshing after the plains of North India where the business of governance kept them, they planted gardens with stepped terraces and flowing watercourses. When they rested in their gardens, they dreamt they were in paradise.

Leh

Kashmir Houseboats

The romantic setting of the lake in Kashmir together with the royal setting of the houseboats create magic. The best activity while on the houseboat in Kashmir would be to sit in the balcony and enjoy the multi hues of natural and human life pass by. The view from the houseboat keeps changing with the season too. There are the awe aspiring mountains of the Pir Panjal (also spelt as Panchal) and the majestic mountains of Himalayas. In winter the fun doubles when the snow covered surrounding takes over. The waters of the lake are mesmerizing as it is.

Each houseboat has anything between two and four bedrooms in it with attached bathrooms and a common sitting and dining room. The charges of a houseboat always include all meals and a certain number of crossings by shikara to and from the houseboat. Houseboats offer far more personalized service than hotels because of the far higher host guest ratio.

By Road -
National Highway 1-A, connecting Srinagar with Jammu, is a good, all-weather road with several sharp inclines and hairpin bends. It is maintained by the Border Roads Organization (BRO), which clears the road of any obstructions resulting from natural causes like landslides and heavy snowfall. The famous Jawahar Tunnel that connects Jammu with the Kashmir Valley across the Pir Panjal range falls en route.

The number of British tourists coming to Vietnam is mounting rapidly with 19.3 percent more UK tourists in Vietnam last year than the year before, according to the Vietnam National Administration for Tourism (VNAT).

France, Britain and Germany are the Vietnamese tourism sector’s three major European target markets.However the French and German markets have been growing at a slower pace than Britain.
The Nguyen Brothers company, a new PR-travel firm established by young Vietnamese in Britain, will promote the Saigontourist brand in the UK aiming to turn it into a leading Vietnamese tourism name in Britain and the EU.

Under a contract sealed between the British company and the Hanoi branch of Saigontourist Thursday, Nguyen Brothers Ltd. will conduct market surveys and seek Britain travelers for Saigontourist.
Saigontourist and Nguyen Brothers will work together to increase the number of EU tourists to Vietnam and promote Vietnam’s image in the bloc.
Vietnam tourism’s heavy hitter
Saigontourist opened in 1975 in Ho Chi Minh City as the city’s first tourism-based business and formed into Saigontourist Holding Company in 1999.
The operator has been ranked by the VNAT as one of the leading tourism corporation in Vietnam.
Saigontourist operates tours, hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, retail shops, taxis and training facilities.
The company now runs eight travel service companies, 56 hotels, 13 resorts and complexes, and 24 restaurants. It has also cooperated with 50 local joint ventures, private businesses. It is also part of nine joint ventures with foreign partners.

It operates three Vietnamese restaurants in Japan, one restaurant in Germany and one representative office in Japan. The operator plans to open more Saigontourist branches in Southeast Asia.

The company received over 1.47 million international tourists last year and over 1.2 million guests stayed at Saigontourist-run hotels.

Although it would misrepresent the facts to say that today's Phuket – Thailand's largest island and one of the world's top tourist destinations – looks the same as it did before the 2004 tsunami that was the greatest natural disaster in Earth's recorded history. But reliable anecdotal evidence does confirm that visitors to Phuket would have little reason to think that the island and its famous beaches were ever struck by the deadly wave.

The above factors have been collectively responsible for boosting our country's economic reserves and the impact of India's economic growth on tourism is increasingly being felt in specialty sectors like spiritual tourism, spa tourism, student/senior citizen or family vacation plan segments in tourism as well as (surprise, surprise!) adventure tourism! Better amenities and modernization of roads, infrastructure in hotels, local lodging options, accreditation of genuine travel operators and guides etc., training being imparted by government and private sector individuals interested in developing specific regions for tourism promotion and encouraging global gains for India have all been strategized well.

These policies put in place after significant contribution from field experts like market watchers, tourism ministry and education and foreign affairs ministry support systems are governed by the needs of tourists visiting India for a certain cultural flavor, yet, not be deprived of comforts, hygiene, security and conveniences that are world-class.
Still, contrary to dire predictions by many about the long-term negative effects the disaster would have on Thailand’s important tourist industry, they have not come to pass.

For the most part, tourists have returned to the beaches and resorts on the Patong Beach side of the island, on the Andaman Sea coast, and new or rebuild resorts are there to accommodate them – and to provide essential work opportunities for Thais in the tourist industry. No appreciable drop in tourist numbers has been reported in this critical region. Think what you will about ousted Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, much of the credit for the remarkable recovery, arguably the most thorough of any of the places hit by the tsunami, belongs to him. In a move redolent of his effort to pay off Thailand’s debt to the IMF for its recovery from the 1997 financial crisis, Thaksin determined early on that Thailand would attend to its own recovery – and not wait for international relief funds to arrive.

Some of that recovery has been laced with controversy. Chief among them are the charges that many of the former prime minister’s friends became the recipients of the country’s largesse, extra-legally taking over rights to lands that belonged to longtime Phuket residents whose documents of ownership were destroyed along with so much else during the catastrophe. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for all of the parts of Thailand's Andaman coast struck by the tsunami.

Reconstruction has been slower and more fraught with controversy in Khao Lak to the north, Phi Phi Island farther north, and coastal Krabi across from Phi Phi. Longtime visitors to many of those locations have, in various ways, tried to prevent the original owners of tourist properties there from losing their land and licenses. Not all of the efforts have been successful, and lawsuits regarding lands are choking Thailand's cumbersome court system.

Australia is a very nice place for tour. The people there is as relaxed and down to earth as anybody possible can be. There is a lot of different activities you can get in to in Australia it is a huge country. Like they say down under no worries mate. If you are more passionate about art and museums, take a tour through the Australian Museum, the famous Museum of Contemporary Art or the Australian National Maritime Museum.

The amazing thing that happens is that after a couple of days with them you tend to be the same way. Why worrie, nothing good comes out of that anyway. Even if you you are not into adventure you can have a wonderful time on a safari, it is safe to go out with these guys they know how to take good care of you.
Sydney is also well known for the special wild life so take the time to visit the Sydney Aquarium, Taronga Zoo, the Australian Reptile Park and the unique Koala Park Sanctuary. The species on display are unique and representative for the entire Australia.

Kurranda is about an hours drive uphill, or you can take the scenic cable skyway or the kurranda train. Views of the Barron Falls and Tropical rainforest abound. Kurranda has a little market village feel about it. In the picture left you see it in full flow but sometimes it can almost be none existant as water is diverted for the Stanmore hydro power station and due to the impact of the dry.

Very friendly people and the scenery is amazing on some places.If you want adventure you can go on safaris. Crocodile Dundee the movie was a big hit for Australia and the people working as safari guides. If you want adventure this is the place to go, it is almost as you are in the movie.

Other important landmarks that catch the eye of the visitor are the Sydney Harbor Bridge, the Sydney Tower that is the tallest building in the city, Luna Park with the huge Ferris Wheel, and Darling Harbor that encloses a large number of shops, restaurants and other facilities in a spectacular scenery. Don’t miss the scene of the Olympic Games, the Sydney Olympic park. The Rocks is an historical neighborhood of Sydney with a wide variety of cultural and local attractions witch the five stars hotels benefit from.

I can guarantee that you will be a different person when you come back after a couple of days in the bush. When you see your first wild crocodile you will feel the blood rushing through your veins. When you see them wild in this environment it is an amazing experience. Even if you have seen wild crocodiles before I think you to will agree that in this place the experience is different. I can not put my finger on what it is but it might be the legends and the stories they tell that makes this so much different from anything else. If you have the chance to go on a crocodile safari you do not have to think twice it will be worth it guaranteed.

Travel and tour in Sydney

Sydney is a huge diverse metropolis with numerous cultures and ethnicities living within the city. The central city is where you will want to spend most of your time as the surburbs hold little in the way for tourists. Some surburbs are no go zones being ethnic gettos with drug problems and the like. However the central city and the eastern beaches are safe and great places to visit.

Sydney is one of the largest cities in Australia and also on the top of the list for traveling destinations for its historical legacy and beauty. It is also known to set trends in various modern fields like design, fashion and cuisine. Sydney is also a very important economical center and it was the host of the Olympic Games in the year 2000. Despite the large number of inhabitants, you can enjoy the many green spaces and public parks.

Shopping:- There is plenty of shopping to be done in Sydney. If your from the UK or the USA then the exchange rate makes it even better for you. In the Central CBD are plenty of shops, one of my favourites is the Victoria building. Great design with traditional features. If you're there on the hour go to the very top where there is a large clock. On the hour it shows scenes of British royality with a bit of a fanfare.

Hop on the monorail and go to Darling habour (see picture left as seen from the top of Sydney tower). Plenty of places to buy t-shirts and other souvenirs. Also on the ground floor is the best tasting fudge shop I've been to. I recommend the apricot favoured fudge. If your travelling around in the inner city buy a rail circle hopper ticket which allows you to get on and off the train as many times a day as you wish and includes Redfern station which is right next to paddy's markets. Another place to check out is China town just to the south of the CBD.

Attractions:- an icon of Australia. From there walk to the ferry terminal which attracts numerous entertainers and gives a good view of the habour. Continue around towards the Sydney habour bridge and you will run into "the Rocks" and see what old Sydney looked like. Lots of bars and places to eat with more shopping. Hyde park is another place to visit. At night it is lit up with lights in the trees. Bring an apple and feed the possums up in the trees. Kings Cross and Oxford street are center of "night life".

Greater Sydney:- If you head out to the blue mountains via train or car Katoomba has great views of the Blue Mountains as well as walking tracks. Take the cable car across the gorge and look a thousand feet straight down or take the 'railway' and go down to the bottom. I recommend sitting right at the front if possible. Take in a view of the three sisters. One of my favourite place to visit in the Blue Mountains is the Jenolan Caves. Numerous caves to chose from and beautiful to see. Just a tip going down the road to the caves make sure you chose a low gear or you will burn out your brakes.

If you are on a visiting tour of Sydney, the best place to start is, of course, the Sydney Opera House. This icon of the city attracts the attention of millions of tourists every year and it is without any doubt, one of the most famous constructions in the world today.

Gold Coast
The center of the Gold Coast is Surfers Paradise. A very long strip of yellow sand beach, however the name is not entirely correct The better surfing on the coast is found off the kirra point breaks and Coolangatta has the whitest sand and bluest water. Surfers Paradise may be more appropriately named for its after hours activities. Orchid Ave and the surrounding streets are a hot bed of night life with numerous nightclubs and other going ons. In the summer time is it just one event after another with the Indy car series, then schoolies, then Christmas and the New Year Fireworks - Standing room only as Surfers is packed out at this time. Generally safe though except for the odd drunk idiot looking for a fight.

Theme Parks - the Gold Coast has numerous theme parks including Seaworld, Dreamworld, Movie World, Wet n Wild, and Currumbin Bird Sanctuary. For more on these see the link on the side for (Gold Coast theme Parks or Seaworld Nara Resort).
The Gold Coast's Hinderland also has much to offer. Early morning balloon rides, walking tracks and O'Reilly's. O'Reilly's is a bit of a drive but its worth the trip just to hand feed the brightly coloured parrots. Also there is a tree top walk with a walkway high up in the trees - not for those afraid of heights. There is also a guest house for those who would like an overnight stay.

Cairns
Cairns is the main gateway to the Great Barrier reef. Viewed from the air the reef shows its true form a series of small reefs and Islands. Beautiful seen from the air as emerald coloured jewels they are even better close up. A Boat trip out to the reef takes over an hour depending on where on the reef they stop. The best view is obviously for the scuba divers. Be warned though the waters are dangerous with numerous creatures that can kill so follow the local advice. Sharks, Jellyfish, Snakes, Stone Fish, Deadly blue ring octopus and yes stingrays (although Steve Irwin was only the third person in Australia to die from a stingray so don't get too carried away). The Esplanade has been reworked and numerous tourist now sunbake on it. The central city is a backpackers heaven and numerous night clubs, bars, restaurants cafes carter for almost every taste but obviously seafood is a specialty.

The Beaches - you are spoilt for choice here. Beautiful yellow sand, rolling waves and patrolled. Follow the advice of the surf life savers with their traditional yellow and red hats. Bondi of course is the most famous with numerous bars, cafes and shops. But Maroubra is probably better for surfing and swimming. Catch the Manly ferry and walk across to the ocean beach and there is a lovely walk to the heads passing numerous restaurants. Cronulla beach is nice to the south with some nice walks as well.

A visit to the Daintree (where rainforest meets the reef) can be relaxing. Though I recommend you take in a boat ride and see Crocodiles in their natural environment. We saw four on our trip with a tiny year old one and a large one capable of making you lunch.

The red sandstone walls of Lal Quila, the Red Fort, extend for two kms and vary in height from 18 metres on the river side to 33 metres on the city side. Shah Jahan started construction of the massive fort in 1638 and it was completed in 1648. Before he could move his capital from Agra to Shahjahanabad in Delhi, he was deposed and imprisoned in Agra Fort by his son Aurangzeb.

Laxminarayan Temple / Birla Temple

The Lakshmi Narayan Temple , more popularly known as the Birla Mandir, is a recent shrine built by a famous family of Indian industrialists. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.

Qutub Minar :

This magnificent structure in the Southern part of the capital was built by a Muslim King, Qutub-ud-din Aibak in 1199 A.D. A part of it which he could not finish was completed by another Muslim King Iltutmish. The minar is 72.5 m high and has as its base a Mosque. In front of the imposing structure is an iron pillar believed to have been built in the 5th century A.D. which has not caught rust ever since it was built.

Humayun's Tomb

This tomb, which as built by emperor Humanyun's wife, took eight years to complete. The emperor's wife Begai Begum was buried in the tomb and the structure is first of its kind built in the center of a well - planned garden. The combination of white marble and red sand stone was a great influence on later Mughal architecture. It is generally regarded as a prototype of the famed Taj Mahal of Agra.

President House :

A stone throw away from Parliament House is the Rashtrapati Bhavan which is the official residence of the President of the country. Designed by the Lutyens , it was the official residence of the Viceroy when the British ruled India. With 340 rooms and an area of about 350 acres . The pillars and the porticos are an architect's marvel. Although special permission has to be obtained to visit the complex, the Mughal Gardens within the complex are atreat for the eyes and are open to the public during certain periods of year.
